Firefighters were called to the house on Lyndon Avenue at Bellbridge about 12.30am on Tuesday.
A woman was alerted to the blaze by her barking Chihuahua and she called Triple-0.
Her neighbour tried to assist after being alerted to the incident.
The property was extensively damaged, with the fire appearing to start in a rear laundry area of the home.
Bethanga fire brigade captain Ben Mitchell said thick smoke was pouring from the roof when firefighters arrived.
"It was pretty daunting," he said.
"We don't get too many fires like this in our area.
"We gained access to the building and there was some quite substantial damage."
Wodonga senior station officer Sean Crosthwaite said about 20 firefighters in six trucks attended.
"One lady received minor burns to her hands," he said.
"It's being investigated this morning."
An electrical issue may have caused the incident, which is yet to be confirmed.
Fire crews spent about three hours at the property and investigators attended the site on Tuesday.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the occupant, aged in her 60s, was assessed at the scene by paramedics.
"We treated a woman for minor burns," the spokesman said.
"She wasn't taken to hospital."
The resident later said she needed some further treatment for the burns.
The home was left uninhabitable due to the damage.
The fire did not appear to be suspicious.
