The BPL Cup was introduced in 2017 as a nationwide tournament open to all clubs - not dissimilar to the FA Cup soccer competition.

Each of the eight Australian states and territories hold preliminary rounds, which lead to regional finals and then state finals.

The champions of each state and territory will contest the BPL Cup finals at Brisbane's Club Pine Rivers, with all expenses paid.

A minimum of four teams are required for the tournament to go ahead at Commercial Club on June 23.

Teams will be divided into four sections and a second day of play has been set aside on June 30.

Commercial member and Riverina District Women's Bowling Association chair Sue Thurley is the tournament organiser.

"A month or so ago, Bowls Australia Regional Coordinator David Inglis came down from Wagga and we were talking about how to increase the profile of bowls and get new members," she said.

"As an off chance, David threw me a little folder on the BPL Cup and they were calling for clubs to host the preliminary rounds. I approached the Commercial Club and they said go for it."

The event is open to all players affiliated with Bowls NSW, but it's different to regular pennant competition.

The format is two-bowl triples and teams can consist of three or four players, male, female or mixed, but must all be from the same club.

Only three are on the green and can only be interchanged following an end.

Each game consists of two sets of five-ends, with a one-end tie-break if required.

Teams can also nominate a powerplay end in each set to play for double points.

"It will be a good event, I hope we get the entries to make it worthwhile," Thurley said.

"If we get a good response this time, we won't have any trouble getting it back to the district again.

"Bowls Australia is trying to get these shorter formats out in the public eye.

"Pennant can take three-and-a-half to four hours, whereas each game will be just over an hour."
