The Mayday Hills Arts Society have revived a room near the old Bijou Theatre and their first performance will take place there on Friday.

Wendy Stephens, with Christine Cansfield-Smith, formed the society 18 months ago.

"The building came up from the owners of Mayday Hills, and they wanted to make a bit of an arts space," Ms Stephens said.

"Christine and I turned it into studios and a gallery, and then we had the opportunity of taking over the second floor about 12 months later.

"There was a beautiful room that I immediately though would make a fantastic theatre."

Ms Stephens said 'Bombshells' by Joanna Murray-Smith involved the monologues of six women.

"I've always wanted to do this play since seeing it 10 years ago," she said.

"I play Winsome Webster, an older woman who only mixes with other widows, but has an underlying need for something more."

More broadly, the society has gathered momentum with all 17 studios being rented out by artists.

"We wanted artists to be able to get together in a space they could afford and we think we've achieved that," she said.

"We have had visiting artists from Melbourne and Sydney and they can't believe what we've got."

The 'Upstairs Playhouse' will be opened this Friday evening by Joseph Thomsen ahead of the first performance of Bombshells.
