Ms Haines was chosen by the Voices of Indi to succeed former member for Indi Cathy McGowan, with Ms McGowan describing the pair as being from the 'same stable'.
Speaking to her orange supporters Dr Haines claimed victory.
"No where has anywhere bucked the trend like Indi," she told those gathered.
"Tonight everyone we have made Australian federal history."
Voices for Indi supporters were ecstatic throughout her speech, with Dr Haines paying special tribute to her predecessor Cathy McGowan.
"I promise to do my best by this beautiful land and to do my best for you," Dr Haines said.
