This will no longer be treated as an outlier in the history of the seat, but a serious trend.
Incoming MP Helen Haines is an independent in terms of federal politics, but was chosen by political group Voices for Indi and had the backing of more than 1700 volunteers who wanted something other than the old Liberal v Labor battle.
V4I was so integral in the campaign, that members John Davis and Alana Johnson were invited to make a speech after Dr Haines' victory became clear on Saturday night.
Ms Johnson told The Border Mail the group measured Indi's success by the "huge surge in people taking action", rather than just an election win.
"We see more and more people actually want to participate actively in how things happen in Indi," she said.
The movement was described as "far bigger than Helen" and more a reaction to poor behaviour from those in authority - likened to the #metoo movement and backlash against abuse of power by not only Australia's politicians, but previously trusted institutions like the banks, aged care facilities and Catholic Church.
"People in Indi are looking through a different lens of values now ... the pursuit of power at all costs is just not acceptable anymore," Ms Johnson said.
"V4I is at the edge of a big shift in how people perceived leadership."
She said the world would stop complicity trusting old institutions and lead the change themselves, and the rise of independent politicians like Dr Haines and Cathy McGowan was just one example of that happening.
The process of going to the electorate to hear their views on issues, which was used by Ms McGowan, is expected to continue under the new MP.
Dr Haines' husband Phil, who is also a founding member of V4I and Ms McGowan's former campaign manager, admitted to the crowd on Saturday that he "partly caused this" when he convinced her to stand.
"It has been a huge display of courage on Helen's part," he said.
"I could see a long time ago that Helen had the absolute potential to be the representative in Indi. She never wanted to do that to be honest, it took a lot of discussion over 12 months."
Dr Haines responded when she saw how many of V4I's 1700 members wanted her to step forward.
"You will be a fantastic representative for all of us in Canberra and we'll be there to support you. As hard as it might be, you have the whole community with you," Mr Haines said.
