Hayden David Rudy Lombaert came to the attention of police when he did a burn-out as he took off from a set of traffic lights.
He later reached a speed of at least 80km/h, though police said it could have been anywhere up to 100km/h, in a 60km/h zone and ran a red light.
"You could kill yourself or other people or the child in your car," magistrate Rodney Brender told Lombaert in Albury Local Court on Monday.
"It's an aggravating factor that there's a 12-year-old in your car."
MORE LOCAL NEWS:
Lombaert, 25, pleaded guilty to driving recklessly, furious or at a speed dangerous.
Defence solicitor Mark Cronin submitted to Mr Brender that for the sake of the sentencing exercise, it had to be accepted that the speed at which Lombaert traveled was at the lower level of 80km/h.
He also pointed out that the traffic light had not turned red at the point at which Lombaert proceeded through the intersection.
Lombaert's bad driving was witnessed by police at the intersection of Young and Dean streets on March 22 about 8pm.
Police were waiting for traffic lights to turn green, at the intersection of Young and Dean streets on March 22 about 8pm, when they saw a silver Infiniti sedan accelerate harshly, causing the wheels to lose traction and the tyres to "squeal".
Lombaert's car took off south along Young Street towards Smollett Street.
Police followed, turning on their lights and sirens to try to get Lombaert, who they estimated was doing "no less than 80km/h and no more than 100km/h", to pull over.
The traffic lights turned orange as Lombaert approached and turned red as he drove through the intersection. He then stopped, which was when police saw the boy.
Mr Brender convicted Lombaert, disqualified him from driving for 12 months and fined him $800.
