Wangaratta president Wally Pasquali is rapt to have a dedicated round to women's soccer.
"Women's soccer needs to be improved and promoted and I think this is a great opportunity for that," he said.
"Whilst we probably don't have the ideal situation at the moment with six teams, we've just got to keep the girls engaged in the sport and the league will be in a good place in a few years' time."
Also in sport:
St Pats and Melrose meet at 3pm at Alexandra Park, while Wangaratta and Albury City, and Albury United and Boomers are at 1.10pm.
"It's going to be a very different atmosphere," St Pats' star Claire Mahoney said.
"It will be good to have the senior men there to watch and encourage us because we're always there for them."
Melrose's Ash Thurnam is hopeful the attention the women's league is now getting will boost the profile.
"You can only go up from here surely, this is our low point," she added.
