Kyle Briggs tipped out fuel from a lawnmower inside the Stevenson Street property on December 1 last year before lighting it.
He freely admitted to the incident after walking outside the home.
It followed an assault that left a man needing eight stitches earlier that evening.
He has been in custody since his arrest and was sentenced in the Wangaratta County Court on Wednesday.
