Your Brain Matters is a free event organised by Dementia Australia to be held at Westmont Aged Care Services on Thursday, June 27 from 10am to 11.30am.
Dementia Australia manager of client services Vincent Poisson encouraged people to attend and learn more about the five steps to maximise their brain health.
"The Your Brain Matters program has been designed to equip people with the knowledge and tools to live a brain healthy life and potentially reduce the risk of dementia," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The steps include looking after the heart and following a healthy diet with vegetables, fruit, fish, grains, nuts, legumes (beans, peas and lentils) and lean meat.
Doing some kind of physical activity increases blood flow to the brain while mentally challenging the brain with new activities helps build new brain cells and strengthen connections between them.
People should also take part in social interaction with those whose company they enjoy.
Dementia Australia said an estimated 447,000 people nationally had dementia, with this number projected to reach more than 1.1 million by 2058.
Registrations for Your Brain Matters are essential and can be made online through Eventbrite, by calling (03) 9815 7840 or emailing Yvonne.gottschalk@dementia.org.au.
The information session has been supported by the Ian Rollo Currie Estate Foundation.
