Ultra Project Services was awarded a contract to revamp the Newell Highway hub for nearly $630,000 by Berrigan Council.
Council general manager Rowan Perkins said a meeting between the shire and the contractor would be held on-site this Friday to map out a timeframe for the work.
Mayor Matthew Hannan said he was hopeful the upgrade would be complete by December 31.
"We'd like to think construction would start after the financial year at some stage and ideally you would like to think, weather permitting and everything going to plan, it would be finished by the end of the year," he said.
The removal of the annexe connecting the School of Arts building and hall will be the initial focus, with the ongoing use of the hall for basketball during construction still to be determined.
Despite awarding the contract, the council is yet to determine how it will fund a $300,000 shortfall.
"Whether that comes out of a surplus in the budget and whether we have to find it from somewhere else (is to be decided)," Cr Hannan said.
"I'd like to think we would have that money through a surplus and hopefully we can use that and no other projects would be affected."
A report on the best option for bankrolling the gap is being compiled for the council to consider next month.
Cr Hannan flagged the council seeking grants for refurbishment beyond that covered in the contract.
