The man, also known as Joseph O'Donohoo, is wanted on an unrelated outstanding warrant for allegedly wounding a person with intent and is described as about 185cm tall with a thin build with brown hair and brown eyes.
Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said police believe the 25-year-old victim, who has since checked himself out of hospital, was stabbed in the stomach near a block of units on Dempsey Place before making his way to South Albury Takeaway to get help.
"Since then detectives have conducted an investigation and we believe that a male who has currently has a warrant may be able to assist us with our inquiries ... Police have conducted a thorough canvass of the area and it has led them to a block of units in Dempsey Place," he said.
"CCTV, witnesses and other people in the street have been canvassed in relation to it, which has led us to believe that this male Dawson may be able to assist us with our inquiries."
Anyone who sees Mr Dawson has been warned to not approach him, but contact triple zero immediately.
Information can be provided to Albury police on (02) 6023 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
