Wilson Transformer general manager Jon Retford said 12 schools have already signed up to be a part of the challenge's 16th year, with discussions ongoing with a few more.
He said the introduction of the 50 watt panel meant cars should be faster, bigger and better able to tolerate cloud cover, which should make for a fantastic race day.

"There should be a bit of speed, probably a few accidents and lots of fun," Mr Retford said.
"It's one of the few ways industry gets to connect with students... and students get to see what goes on in manufacturing.

The 2019 challenge was officially launched on Thursday near Retro Cafe in Wodonga.
