With apprentice Patrick Scorse aboard, Murrawee was forced to work hard early to find the lead in the $22,000 0-58 Hcp, (1000m).
Despite burning plenty of petrol early, Murrawee ($3.70) proved too strong for his rivals over the final furlong to cruise to a 1-length over Mistake ($4).
Race favourite Nishani Spirit ($3.50) was a head further back in third.
Rooney said it was a brave performance by Murrawee to hold on for a convincing victory.

"It was a tough effort to get the win and he showed plenty of fight," Rooney said.
"To his credit he was going away from them at the end and they weren't making any ground.
"He is an honest bugger, that's for sure."
Rooney said it was satisfying to prove some rival trainers wrong who were quick to pot the horse.
"When I first brought him in from the farm at Dederang about a year ago, one Wodonga trainer told me to get rid of the horse and that he will never win another race," he said.
"I wonder what he think's of the horse now that he has won $25,000 just in the past month."
Rooney trains two horses at Wodonga after relocating from Dederang in May last year.
The veteran trainer has got an uncanny knack for finding a winner and had great success with mighty mare Pink Shimmer.
Pink Shimmer won almost $300,000 in prizemoney.
