Northern Exposure - Stories from Lockhart River and Fitzroy Crossing will open at De Bortoli's Rutherglen Estate and the Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery on Friday.
The first exhibition of its kind in Australia, Northern Exposure - Stories from Lockhart River and Fitzroy Crossing showcases modernist Aboriginal art, created at vast distances apart, yet each containing a collective spirit of yearning for Country.
Featuring three celebrated Aboriginal artists, the exhibition comprises large spirit figure and story-telling works by Jack Macale Loodgengardinge (Fitzroy Crossing, Kimberley, WA); stories of friendship, food gathering and observation of landscape by the late artist Adrian King (Lockhart River, Cape York, Queensland); and grand scale abstract colour fields paintings by Patrick Butcher (Lockhart River).
King and Butcher were founding members of the Lockhart River Art Gang - a group of modernist painters - in 1995.
The work is shaped by landscape and history, with subjects including traditional life, fishing, seasonal fires, body painting and the environment.
TELL ME WHAT'S HAPPENING:
Many Lockhart River Art Gang artists are known for their rapid execution of works, using their fingers and hands to apply and scrape away paint layers on the canvas.
Works from the three artists are held by major art institutions including the National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery and the National Museum of Australia.
Sixty per cent of sales from this exhibition will go to the Lockhart River Art Corporation.
Butcher will be a guest speaker at the official opening on Friday, which starts at 6pm.
