The twin cities have been without a co-ordinator since the resignation of Carmel Duck almost a year ago, but money has still been raised locally for the foundation via its long-established and successful World's Greatest Shave initiative.

Mrs Duck was based at the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre, which has been lobbying intensely behind the scenes for a replacement.

Oncologist Craig Underhill said the region deserved better.

"We had a co-ordinator who was able to provide face to face support to our patients," he said.

"The co-ordinator was able to attend multi-disciplinary case conferences and then convey complex management decisions to patients and their families and give tailored information.

"She was an important part of our team.

"She convened a local support group and held information sessions and helped with fundraising.

"None of this can be replaced by calling a hotline."

Last year $60,000 was raised for Trinity Anglican College student Hunter McBurnie who was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma 12 months earlier.

It's understood the amount raised was the largest in NSW.

Leukaemia Foundation general manager Emma Craig defended the charity.

"Supporting all Australians affected by blood cancer is a priority for the Leukaemia Foundation," she said.

"In the past 12 months alone, the Leukaemia Foundation provided more than 720 interactions of support for people in the Albury-Wodonga region.

"This support included emotional, educational, financial and practical support such as transport services and access to accommodation facilities in capital cities so that patients have a home-away-from-home to live in while accessing life saving treatment.

"All of these services were provided at no cost.

"Residents of Albury Wodonga can access support at any time through a team of blood cancer support coordinators who are contactable by phone on 1800 620 420, email on info@leukaemia.org.au or even via a video conference call.

"To help us provide increasing levels of support we rely on local health care professionals to refer their patients to the Leukaemia Foundation."

Dr Underhill said he knew of friends, family members and colleagues who had raised significant amounts of dollars for the Leukaemia Foundation via activities like World's Greatest Shave in recent years.
