Will Haberfield has been invited to Melbourne for a practice match on July 18, with talent scouts keeping a very close eye on his development.
The 16-year-old Albury Hotspurs export was recommended to Victory by Murray United technical director Adam Carty after a standout debut season in the under-16 NPL competition.
Haberfield got his first taste of the elite environment at Victory two weeks ago and is excited to have another opportunity.
"After being recommended, I had Melbourne Victory scouts start watching some of the games," Haberfield said.
"With one in particular being a very good game, I was able to be picked up by Melbourne Victory and put into their trials.
"It will take a lot of trial matches and they said they're looking to expand for 2020.
"It won't be this season, but hopefully next season or the season after I can maybe get signed up to the Melbourne Victory academy."
ALSO IN SPORT:
Haberfield regards himself as somewhat of a "late bloomer" having never previously made state or representative teams in his younger years.
"I lived in Vietnam when I was younger and soccer was definitely the main sport over there," he said.
"I never really trialled for state teams when I was younger, but as I've gotten older I've had a bit of a late run into it and starting to get my opportunities now at 15 and 16 years of age.
"When I was playing around under-eights, I was put into goals and found it my favourite position, so I've played there ever since."
Haberfield describes the trials as "game-realistic" and finds he thrives in the high-level environment.
"The best part about it is the intensity," he said.
"Everything is so much faster and a lot more serious.
"The facilities and the level of play is something I've never experienced before and it's something I'd like to do (for a career) if I could."
Haberfield also considered playing for Capital Football outfit Wagga City Wanderers, but is happy he chose Murray United.
