On October 12, 1973, the 17-year-old was abducted from Smollett Street in Albury. Two days later she was found deceased, at Horseshoe Lagoon having been strangled, raped and bashed.

Despite multiple investigations and two inquests, no one has ever been convicted of her murder.

Police charged three men in connection to the crime in 1990, but the case did not proceed and the men were never convicted.

A distant cousin of Bronwynne, Colin Michael Newey was arrested and charged with her rape and murder in 2014 but the charges were dropped.

Details of the case will feature on Nine's Murders, Lies and Alibis program across two episodes dubbed The Beauty Queen Killers on Monday and Tuesday at 9.15pm.

Reporter and executive producer Mark Llewellyn said the show includes Mr Newey's first media interview in which Mr Llewellyn, Derryn Hinch, and forensic criminologist Xanthe Mallett question and confront him, with a polygraph machine "ready to go".

The reliability of polygraph machines, commonly known as lie detector tests, is questionable, with NSW deeming them inadmissible as evidence in court for this reason in a 1983 Act.

Mr Newey has consistently maintained his innocence.

Mr Llewellyn said The Beauty Queen Killers featured official police interview recordings, a revelation by a police informant and interviews with Bronwynne's family.

"In recent weeks, the previous $200,000 reward has been increased by $800 000, and no wonder, because walking amongst us to this day is the ringleader who led the savage torture and murder of Bronwynne," Mr Llewellyn said.

"She deserves justice and he deserves jail.

"This is the $1 million cold case the police are desperate to solve."

When announcing the increased reward, Homicide Squad Detective Superintendent Scott Cook said someone out there knows who is responsible for Bronwynne's death.
