Quacky Jack is set to contest the $23,000 Maiden Handicap, (1400m) with Nick Souquet booked for his first ride on the gelding.

The lightly raced three-year-old has finished runner-up in his past two starts and arguably should have won on both occasions.

Last start Quacky Jack hit the front 200m from home at Ballarat, was headed at the 100m, before kicking back to be beat in a photo finish.

Previous to that at Corowa, Quacky Jack didn't receive any clear galloping room until the 100m mark and flashed late to be a certainty beaten.

Widdison said he would be disappointed if Quacky Jack didn't finish in the first two placings today.

"His last two performances have been great and I will be disappointed if he couldn't run first or second looking at the form," Widdison said.

"He hit the front at Ballarat last-start and got a bit lost and when the other horse went past him it looked like it was going to beat us easy.

"But he kept kicking.

"He keeps improving, every time he steps out he improves.

"So on his home track, drawn well, I would of thought he looks the testing material."

Widdison was also confident the rain affected track would be no issue for Quacky Jack.

"He had one go on a wet track at Albury and although he didn't finish in the placings, I thought his was run was still OK," he said.

"It was more greenness that he didn't finish off the race more than the track conditions."

Widdison has six runners at Wodonga and pinpointed Quacky Jack as his best chance on the card.
