Across the two cities, more than 22,000 residents are organ donors.

DonateLife Victoria state medical director Rohit D'Costa thanked those who had registered and encouraged more people to sign op.

In the first six months of 2019, 219 lives have already been saved in Victoria - including that of Albury boy Archer Irwin - from 83 deceased Victorian organ donors and their families.

His mum, Nikki, said there was no greater nor more selfless gift than giving life through organ donation.

"We will be forever thankful to our selfless donor and their family for in their deepest grief gifting Archer with a second chance at life."

Mr D'Costa said there were currently 1551 Australians waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

Last year in Victoria, a record 193 donors and their families made the selfless decision to donate organs - saving the lives of 529 people.

Mr D'Costa said DonateLife week, which begins on July 28, was a time to talk about donation.

"Organ donation saves lives," he said.

"Every year, more and more lives are being saved and transformed by organ donation, and that is only possible because of the hundreds of grieving families who selflessly support their loved one's decision to donate their organs."

Dr D'Costa paid tribute to the families who have made the life-saving decision to donate the organs and tissues of loved ones.

"We want to thank every single family who has made the decision to donate, and hope they get some comfort out of the knowledge their loved one has saved the lives of others," he said.
