The Islamic Society of Albury Wodonga is seeking $200,000 via the government's My Community Project which is a contest for up to $260,000 in each electorate across NSW.

It is one of 28 nominees in the seat of Albury.

Society president Nazmul Ahasan said nearly $800,000 was needed to replace the rundown house in Lavington's Wagga Road which has been the Border's mosque since 2013.

"We have some funds but just not enough to go ahead, so we're trying to generate funds in any way possible and this is a great opportunity if we secure this grant," Mr Ahasan said.

"We have been collecting for the last six or seven years, so we're slowly, slowly getting there and if we get $200,000 that will take us to the point where we can start construction."

Reasons given online for "why should you vote for this project" include it helping to attract more skilled workers and providing a "better understanding of Islam and why radicalisation happens".

Mr Ahasan said a new mosque would also provide a dedicated room for women to use.

"We have one of the biggest amounts being asked for, so it will be challenging but we have been promoting it and encouraging people to jump online and vote for it," he said.

Other projects vying for votes in Albury involve CCTV for the Kiewa Street multistorey car park ($200,000), a refurbishment of Albury Wodonga Theatre Company's base ($185,521), new display cabinets for Albury Show Society ($145,719) and an electronic scoreboard for Alexandra Park ($120,000).

Town nominees include a new waterslide at Mulwala ($180,000), upgraded Holbrook netball courts ($180,000) and after-hours learning hub for school students at Corowa ($70,000).

There is also a push for $200,000 to be provided for the construction of a statue of bushranger Ned Kelly with a future World War I general John Monash at Jerliderie.

Voting, which is restricted to residents of the Albury electorate, is open until August 15 and can be done at mycommunityproject.service.nsw.gov.au.
