Mikey Mike and the Hip Hop Kids released Music Makes Me Happy last week on digital sites and as a CD.

With songs like the title track, Talking Too Loud In The Library, Best Friends and Family and Jump To The Beat, the album offers rap music to get youngsters moving.

Performers Michael Martin and his daughter Mia, 5, and son Max, 3, recorded the songs in a week, although years were needed to get to that stage.

Martin, who was part of Albury-Wodonga hip hop group RHF (Rock Hard Foundation), had the idea even before his own children came along, but their arrival helped develop the process.

"We just kind of wanted to snapshot their life at this time and make an album as a family," he said.

"It's nice to have something a bit fresh and family-orientated and friendly lyrics behind it.

"Put your hands in the air, jump up and down, there's lots of movements, lots of fun dancing."

Martin created the music from scratch and sometimes had young co-stars who didn't want to join him in the studio.

"But the more we practised it, the more they came around and then they were excited to get in there," their father said.

"All Max wants is to play Mikey Mike in the car, 'Play Music Makes Me Happy, Mum'.

"He knows that it's his voice on there."

Martin said hip hop could be seen as a niche market, but children generally loved the musical style.

"It's kind of cool," he said.

"It's repetitive, you've got patterns in the music and they pick it up quite quickly and then they feel like they're part of the music."
