The Tigers refused to concede a last term goal in the impressive 13.15 (93) to 4.10 (34) home win in the worst conditions of the season.

"Really happy with that, one thing that has been letting us down is our last quarters," Tigers' co-coach Tom McGrath said.

"'Wang' kicked four against us in a five-minute period, even last game, Corowa hadn't kicked a goal until the 10-minute mark of the last quarter and they banged on three in a row, so it's those little lapses.

"It was pleasing that we held them to no goals in the last quarter and even though we only kicked a couple ourselves, we finished it off really well."

Albury jumped into second spot, but it's the tightest finish for the top four teams in years.

With two rounds left, Lavington sits on 56 points with Albury, Wangaratta and Myrtleford all a win behind.

Albury leads on percentage (187.99) from Wangaratta (178.42) and the Saints (142.86).

The Tigers' 2009 team was hosting its premiership reunion at Albury Sportsground but while that side posted one of the biggest wins - 77 points against Yarrawonga - in grand final history and was undefeated - this current team doesn't have the luxury of being clearly superior to the rest so it's crucial to iron out any problems heading to finals.

Admittedly, Albury will face far tougher opposition than a rebuilding, albeit gutsy, Yarrawonga, but the Tigers could not have done any more, particularly with belting rain for long periods.

"The backline played really well, we moved the ball pretty well, which has been a focus for us, just defensively limiting those guys, especially out of the middle," McGrath said.

Elliott Powell was outstanding for the Tigers and he's now a top 10 player, at the very least, in the league.

Powell kicked three goals, but was also involved in a host of other attacking opportunities.

In fact, a number of the long-time stars - Dean Polo, Brayden O'Hara, Shaun Daly and Co - were central to a number of goals and that is why the Tigers will worry any side in finals.

Jessy Wilson's transformation to defence continues to build after another strong display, while Jake Page also kicked three goals.

Yarrawonga didn't have a multiple goalkicker, but the new-look and young side, which is missing stars Mark Whiley (hamstring) and Tyler Bonat (Achilles), battled bravely.

"There were some willing situations (in the wet) and our boys never backed out of going and putting their head over the ball," coach Damian Sexton said.

"Our young players did stand up, our execution of the ball from those stoppages wasn't quite as good as we wanted."

Interleague player Tim McAuley was excellent for the visitors, using his powerful frame to halt attacking raids, while Ryan Bruce also tried hard.
