A man who was allegedly in possession of drugs and weapons, and tried to grab a police officer's gun when he was arrested, has been remanded in custody.

David Johnson, 39, appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Friday charged with assault police, resist arrest, possessing two knives, and trafficking methamphetamine.
He was arrested with 7.5 grams of ice in his jacket.
Police allege Johnson tried to run away from officers to avoid being searched for drugs, before a struggle ensued.

That is when he allegedly tried to grab the officer's gun, but was eventually subdued with capsicum spray.
Two members of the public also stopped their cars and intervened to help police.
Johnson will return to court on Monday.
