David Johnson, 38, was pulled over by highway patrol officers in Sisely Avenue in Wangaratta on Thursday, riding a bicycle with a petrol motor attached, and allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine.

When he was asked to empty his pockets, they realised he was hiding something in his jacket.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson told Wangaratta Magistrates Court yesterday the hidden item was 7.5 grams of ice.

But before that was discovered, Johnson allegedly pushed Senior Constable Shane Hughes, starting a scuffle between the pair.

Police eventually subdued Johnson with capsicum spray and arrested him with help from two members of the public.

They also allegedly found him in possession of $630 in cash, a set of scales and a mobile phone with messages related to drug sales.

Johnson was charged with offences including trafficking methamphetamine, assaulting an emergency services worker and not wearing a bicycle helmet.

Detective Thompson confirmed the body-worn cameras were on during the scuffle.

"It does show that the accused does grab Senior Constable Hughes' firearm at one stage," he said.

But Johnson's defence solicitor Geoff Clancy said his client's jacket was over his head at the time, impeding his vision.

"He disputes grabbing for the officer's gun," he said.

"He disputes the drug trafficking charge.

"He concedes he is a methamphetamine user."

Despite opposition from the police, magistrate Ian Watkins granted bail to Johnson, with the conditions he live with his parents in Wangaratta, abide by a curfew between 9pm and 6am, and report to the police station three times per week.

He was also placed on the Court Integrated Services Program, which provides drug treatment.

Mr Watkins said he had reservations because "7.5 grams is a lot of methamphetamine". "Either way it's a concern - if he's trafficking methamphetamine it is a concern, if he's using that much, it's a lot," he said.

The case was adjourned until September.
