Heather Kerr successfully made a request for a deferral of a proposal for demolition of the building, which is owned by Federation Council, to allow for further development of the town's RV park.
Mrs Kerr addressed council in Urana on Tuesday and hoped "proper consultation" could take place before the matter was brought before council again next month.
"It is a building that is 100 years old," she said.
"It is a significant building to Oaklands and how it could possibly not be of any importance historically just fascinates me."

She said the CWA branch had operated out of the building for 21 years before building its own rooms in the town and her own parents had been involved in war.
"When that building is gone and replaced by some tiny little pergola it is going to look more like a wasteland than what it does now," she said.
"It's interesting there has been absolutely no vandalism to the building until there were plans to knock it down.
"There are numerous widows of war veterans and families sitting at home crying because people aren't asking them what they think.
Deputy mayor Shaun Whitechurch queried what the building's future use would be if redeveloped and Cr Andrew Kennedy said it was beyond repair and construction of a rotunda on the site was a better option.
But Cr Gail Law said councillors were duty-bound to do more investigation.
"Oaklands is not represented on council and it's important we show that we do care about them and I'm all for deferring this matter," she said.
Director Susan Appleyard queried the heritage value.
"There is no denying there is some local heritage significance to the building, but whether or not the significance is enough to retain the building is questionable, hence the recommendation," she said.
