Four information reports from February and Mach 2012 have been uncovered over the past week, and lawyers for Victoria Police say there could more.

Information in at least one of those reports, based on intelligence from the woman known as Lawyer X, was passed on to investigators at the Australian Federal Police, Saul Holt QC admitted on Tuesday.

One of the documents was first identified "a number of years ago" in connection to an appeal by convicted drug trafficker and former Lawyer X client Rob Karam, Mr Holt told an inquiry into police use of informers.

"But it had at that stage been incorrectly identified as not including information from Ms Gobbo," he said.

A police analyst following up a request from the AFP in relation to a separate report further investigated and identified three more reports.

The reports are expected to be handed to the royal commission on Tuesday, while police are also putting together a timeline of communications with Ms Gobbo after she was formally deregistered as a police informer in January 2009.

Despite the deregistration then, the inquiry has previously heard Ms Gobbo continued to provide information until an order from then-chief commissioner Simon Overland in April 2010 that nothing more be accepted.

There's also "urgent analysis" underway to determine if there are any more reports, but indications are "positive" that the contact was limited to a short period of time and a particular issue.

Commissioner Margaret McMurdo said the reports should be released quickly.

Earlier, the inquiry heard about the period after Ms Gobbo was deregistered as a source, following the decision to have her become a witness against ex-detective Paul Dale over a 2004 double homicide.

Former senior handler 'Sandy White' said once Ms Gobbo signed the statement connecting Mr Dale to the killings of informer Terence Hodson and his wife Christine, there was no way to keep her informing history secret.

Ms Gobbo knew her career as a barrister was over, so considered giving up the law to become an air traffic controller, a talent scout for informers or training as an FBI profiler.

"Her fascination with criminal profiling would be consistent with your understanding of her, that she was fascinated in motivations for people to engage in criminal activities," Mr Winneke suggested.

But Mr White said he believed that was an overstatement.

Mr Dale was charged with the Hodson murders in 2009, after Ms Gobbo's deregistration.

Charges were dropped in 2010 when underworld killer Carl William, who had implicated Dale in the murders, was killed in prison.

Mr Dale maintains his innocence.
