One of the producers behind The Australian Dream and 2040 in Albury for the Border Mail International Film Festival this week, Virginia Whitwell (Good Thing Productions) said film could be hugely impactful by reaching more people with good storytelling.

Both Madman Entertainment 2019 releases, The Australian Dream and 2040 have been lauded for adding to the national conversation about racism and climate change, respectively.

Whitwell said film could promote change by crystallizing complex issues to a broad audience.

"In The Australian Dream, we had Stan Grant, who is one of the most articulate people I've ever met," she said.

"Film can distill complicated issues into something more easily understood.

"In the same way Stan Grant does for The Australian Dream, Damon Gameau does for 2040; they're very good at crystallizing what the film is about.

"Damon is an outstanding chemist at studying complicated information and making it into digestible information."

The Australian Dream premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 1, when it got a 10-minute standing ovation.

Adam Goodes, Stan Grant, Michael O'Loughlin and (NBA player) Ben Simmons, who is the executive producer on the film, attended the Melbourne premiere.

Ahead of the Albury screening to open the 2019 International Film Festival on Wednesday night, Whitwell said the whole team was delighted with the response to the film.

She said director Daniel Gordon was renowned for sports documentaries that examined greater ideas and issues.

"We hope we can contribute to the critical mass to push for change in a positive way," Whitwell said.

"We're working with indigenous groups to make sure the film can be impactful.

"If you're going to make a film like this you're morally bound to give it life beyond the film experience."

Whitwell has co-produced and produced many scripted and factual projects including award-winning That Sugar Film, A Month Of Sundays and All For One.

Hailing from Britain, she has worked on numerous productions worldwide.

Her production experience includes projects for Warner Bros, HBO, Lucasfilm, EON, 20th Century Fox and Universal.
