Dawson, who will be Jake Sharp's assistant-coach next year before joining him at the helm, has been in touch with the Alpine Saints for almost three years.
"A couple of years ago when I first joined the Giants one of my good mates Michael Thompson, who was actually playing for Albury Tigers at the time, was getting married in Bright and we were in the area," Simpson said.
"My wife, Allira, saw the region and how beautiful it is and we started thinking it could possibly be a plan for the future.
"So I actually got in contact with the Myrtleford footy club in 2017.
"I sent an email to the club off the website and put the feelers out.
"They came back with some interest and the last few years we have kept in touch."
Simpson, 30, has family living at Yackandandah and is close friends with Myrtleford defender Nathan Laracy.

"I'm really, really pumped to be finishing up my AFL career with a decent plan in place," he said.
"It's been on the radar for the last couple of years being on one-year deals with the Giants.
"Footy can come to an end any year.
"It was important to be involved in a footy club after AFL that was enjoyable and a great place to be for family and kids.
"Myrtleford really fit the brief.
"The stars have aligned and we couldn't be happier."
The 210-centimetre ruckman, who is originally from Barnawartha, will move to the North-East in October or November after his commitments with GWS are finished.
"We're hopeful we can go all the way this year," he said.
"That's firmly in our sights at the moment."
