The Bulldogs had the chance to sneak into the finals series after Falcons were heavily beaten 8-1 by Norths in their last home and away clash.
However, United's class prevailed to leave Wodonga fifth.
Magpies will take winning form into the semi-finals after edging out Wombats 2-1, with goals coming from Josh Lavis and Jeremy Maggs.
The final division one men's ladder is: CR United 52, Norths 32, Magpies 30, Falcons 17, Wodonga 16, Wombats 11.

In the women, defending premiers Falcons stormed into finals in top spot with a 3-1 win against Norths.
Jess Madden finished with a double and Jaiden Hamilton also scored, while Cody Smart was on target for Norths.
Magpies saw off Wombats-Beechworth 4-2 to secure third place.
Morgan Coleman, Eliza Gray, Ellie Jarratt and Summer Sutherland shared the goals, with Kylie Leary and Thea Saunders netting one apiece for the Beechbats.
United produced the upset of the round with a 4-3 win against Wodonga on enemy territory.
Tess Palubiski finished with a brace for United as Amy Hollister and Marcie Gray also fired in goals.
The final division one women's ladder is: Falcons 45, Wodonga 38, Magpies 32, United 26, Norths 19, Wombats-Beechworth 4.
