A timeline for pulling down the Hovell Street hub, which faces The Cube, has been put by Wodonga Council's director community development Debra Mudra.
"The demolition tender has been ordered and we're looking at commencing work in November this year and we would like to have the whole site demolished before Christmas with construction starting in January," Ms Mudra told this month's council meeting.
"So we'll be looking at moving our library to a temporary location in October-November and that will be in High Street.
"Where the current customer service (centre) is at the moment we'll be reusing that space as well as the old sports store next to it.
"We'll have it operational sometime in November, but we'll keep our patrons notified of the progress of that, but that's the timeline as it stands now."
At that time it was forecast that construction would start in July-August and be completed by late 2020 or early 2021.
The razing of the library follows the demolition of the adjacent civic centre in 2011 and its replacement by The Cube as the city's showpiece for concerts.
The civic centre was opened in 1971 at the same time as the senior citizens' rooms which continue to stand between the library and Cube.
The library opened in 1982 after having been in High Street in a building now occupied by a flooring store.
That library began in 1916, having been preceded by an athenaeum that shut in 1914.
