Jones, who spent five years with the Bombers earlier in his career, will take on his first senior role with Howlong defender Matt Lee as his assistant.
The 33-year-old is determined to continue the good work of outgoing coach Jack Neil who stepped down after two years in charge.
"It will be good," Jones said.
"I've played a fair bit of footy now and thought it was probably the right time to give coaching a go.

The veteran defender played 16 senior matches for Wodonga under Zac Fulford this year.
Dederang-Mt Beauty president Larissa Barton said the signing of Jones and Lee fell into line with the club's recruiting policy of recent years.
"We're really happy," Barton said.
"We think it's great the club has the ability to get former players back.
"We've put a lot of emphasis on that. "Jack (Neil) has done a fantastic job over the past two seasons and we've retained almost everyone from this year's side."
Lee and Jones spent three years together at Dederang-Mt Beauty under coach Marc Almond and will significantly bolster the Bombers' defence.
The club finished 10th this year with five wins, a draw and 12 losses.
