A hat trick from former A-League striker Andrew Barisic proved the difference.
Adam Burchell also found the back of the net for the league champions, but Melrose pulled two back late through Sam Brosolo.
Wangaratta coach Daniel Vasilevski was pleased with the performance, led by Barisic, but felt his side got a little complacent.

"We brought a few subs on, including myself, who were probably a bit behind the pace and let a couple of goals in," he said.
"His (Barisic's) first goal was pure class, you can see he's got some great ability.

Melrose coach Kade Rixon paid tribute to his side for the way it fought out the game.
"I was super proud today," he added.
