Although the Tigers only lost by 32 points, there were some worrying signs for the league powerhouse.
The defending premier failed to kick a goal until the 20-minute mark of the second quarter.
The Pies also kicked 13 straight behinds with the final scoreline flattering the Tigers.
"Wangaratta were a class above on the day and we were putrid," Mackie said.
"It is the worst finals performance I have been involved in during my time at the Sportsground.
"They were good and there is no doubting they are a quality outfit.
"If we get another shot at Wangaratta, we know we are going to have to match its intensity, pressure, run and spread.
"To be honest they probably beat us in every facet of the game."

The Tigers face a spirited Myrtleford in the first semi-final at Bunton Park on Sunday.
"It's not all doom and gloom," he said.
"They kicked poorly but 15 minutes into the last quarter we were still only 20 points down.
"We probably got a few match-ups wrong in defence.
"But it's no secret our defence is a bit of a juggling act."
