Although there is no 'official' hiking season, many people hibernate indoors during the winter months. If you're one of those, it's time to get off the couch, grab your gear and get going.
But wait! Before you head off into the hills around Nail Can, or up to High Plains, or perhaps tackle a trip along the Razorback to Mt Feathertop, it might be a good idea to make sure you're hiking fit.
Some basic exercises you can do without an expensive trip to the local gym, and which will warm up those lazy muscles and get the heart rate going include the following:
- Crunches to build core strength and help you keep your balance on uneven surfaces.
- Squats and lunges, again to strengthen your core.
- Push-ups to improve upper body strength.
- Cardio - go for a brisk half-hour walk around the neighbourhood, or jump on that stationary bike gathering dust in the corner.
- Step-ups - it's what it says! Find some convenient steps or a use a crate or a box, and step up and down repeatedly. Add a pack if you're planning an extended hike.
Now that you've loosened up, and before you join the Border Bushwalking Club members on one of their many day hikes, take a 30 plus minute walk, two or three times during the week, making sure you're not dawdling. Wear the shoes or boots you'll be wearing on the hike and carry a light-weight day pack to accustom your body to the added weight.
Once you're primed and ready to hit the track you need to keep in mind that it's best to start off with 'baby steps', especially if you've spent all winter being a couch potato.
Choose an easy day walk of no more than 10 kilometres and with not too much elevation gain. There are over 90km of scenic tracks traversing the Mount Buffalo National Park which is only a short drive away, and they don't involve a lot of gut-busting, thigh-burning climbs. Not only will you be able to test your readiness for more challenging hikes, but the scenery will blow you away. An added bonus is that after your hike you and your friends (remember, it's safer to walk in a group) can adjourn to a nearby café for a well-earned coffee and cake while you relive the experience.
Border Bushwalking Club offers a variety of day walks suitable for both beginners and veterans. Check our website at www.borderbushwalking.com.au for details.
