They were the words a specialist told Kylie Paull in 2014 after she had complications with her right leg.

And although it was "hard to hear" it was just three days later she made the decision to have her leg amputated.

"It had to be done, the other alternative was to smash my foot and re-build it," she said.

"I lost my leg in 2014 and wouldn't have been able to do it without Limbs 4 Life, they are just fantastic with the support before and after your surgery."

Mrs Paull said she hoped in sharing her story, other local amputees would "pick up the phone and ask for help".

"It can be very isolating when you first have your surgery," she said.

"You don't have to go through it alone, whether that be talking to someone about what the surgery entails or helping you through the massive life changes afterwards."

Mrs Paull spent six months in hospital after having her leg amputated.

"My husband Chris spent every day bar one next to me supporting me through it," she said.

"It has a massive life impact on your loved ones as well and it can be quite scary for them when you wake up missing a part of your body.

"Even just things like getting in and out of a car, and all the changes you have to do around your home, it is a real life changing event for your loved ones as well.

"My surgery was in 2014 there are still ongoing complications and we are still fighting to save my other leg due to infection so there are a lot of ongoing issues that Limbs 4 Life can help you with."

Limbs 4 Life works to empower amputees and their family members so they "do not have to go through the journey of limb loss alone".

"They make you realise that you aren't the only one going through it," Mrs Paull said.

Mrs Paull will be supporting fellow amputee Geoff Chandler as he walks 50km each day during National Amputee Awareness Week in October.

She will do a few laps with Mr Chandler at the Wodonga Sports Ground on October 4 to raise awareness for Limbs 4 Life. .
