And the long-term goal is that Gardenesque will become the "best garden show between Melbourne and Canberra", with a four-year plan to help the October festival grow.

The festival, which will take over the Botanic Gardens on October 12 and 13, was officially launched by mayor Kevin Mack on Monday.

"It is actually something that goes really well in Canberra and if it can make Canberra happy, why can't it make Albury-Wodonga Happy," he said.

"It is another great event for Albury-Wodonga, and it is something our communities keep telling us - they want quality events in their area and that is what we plan to deliver."

The festival will include flower competitions for both experts and hobbyists, exhibitor markets, children's entertainment, music and local food, beer and wine.

Cr Mack said council aim to "see how it goes" with the event having a cover charge that is yet to be determined.

"It is a trial and error at this point," he said.

"We have one of the most historic botanic gardens in Australia and we need to utilise it more effectively and this is just the way of opening the doors for our community to come through the gates.

"Quite often people of Albury-Wodonga have not been inside the gardens."

Events team leader Ros Walls said they are going to "fill the botanic gardens" for green thumbs as well as families.

"We were looking for something different and we wanted to showcase the gardens," she said.

"It is one of the best regional gardens in Australia.

"There is going to be some beautiful blooms and they are all going to come and blossom ready for Gardenesque. We have set ourselves four years for it to bloom and grow."

Ms Walls said they are hoping they are being "conservative" in estimating 10,000 people will come to the event.

"We would love to put 10,000 people through over the two days," she said.
