The B-double truck overturned after coming off Federation Way at about 12.10pm.
Rural Fire Service Federation group captain Grayd'n Davis said while the tanker was low on fuel, a ruptured diesel tank caused a spillage.
"It was about making sure nothing evolved they way we didn't want it to. We've got a petrol tanker lying on its side, which is a concern," he said.

Firefighters created an earth dam to stop the diesel going to the local waterway and the scene was eventually cleared by dark.
The truck driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Six trucks and 25 people from Rural Fire Service attended the crash, assisted by Fire and Rescue.
