According to AFL.com.au, the Magpies have informed Murray he won't be offered a contract for next season.
Murray has been on the sidelines since August 17 last season after traces of cocaine were detected in a match-day sample.
The wayward star spent two seasons at Sydney before playing 13 games for the Magpies last year before his provisional ban began.
Murray's younger brother, Nick, played for Rovers this season.
Cresswell confirmed Murray would be high on the recruiting radar if he wasn't drafted by another AFL club.
"Certainly if Sam didn't get picked up, we would be keen to have a chat with him," Cresswell said.
"Obviously I'm close with the Murray family and Nick is at the Rovers.
"Sam trained with us throughout the year as well and I have got a strong relationship with him.
"But hopefully Sam will be able to extend his AFL career.
"The 13 matches Sam has already played in my opinion were of a good standard until the sanction he received.
"To be honest, I'd be surprised if he didn't get thrown a lifeline by another club."
Murray would attract the maximum of six points if he joined Rovers under the player points system in the O&M.
