But that didn't stop the attack, Albury Local Court heard this week.
Craig Anthony Evans then tried to spear the victim with one of the broken pieces.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The victim, who Evans had just found in bed having sex with a man he met earlier that day, fled the house naked, running down a Howlong Street and hiding in front gardens in fear for his life.
The court was told that before the attack, back on March 13, Evans stood in the bedroom doorway of the victim's Howlong home.
It was about 7pm.
The victim got out of bed and had a short conversation with Evans, 46, who asked if he could join the pair in bed. The victim declined the offer so Evans left.
He and the victim's two-year relationship had ended about two weeks before.
About an hour later, while still in bed with the other man, the victim heard the front door open.
He went to the lounge room and was startled to see Evans.
The victim, it was stated in a set of agreed facts handed to the court, saw Evans standing near the door with the axe handle.
He was holding the handle in both hands "ready to strike".
"The accused has commenced to strike the victim over the head and general body area without provocation. This has caused the victim extreme pain."
Evans hit the victim at least 10 times, only stopping when the handle snapped in half.
"The accused has then attempted to spear the victim with the broken axe handle he was holding."
Evans then began attacking the other man, who fled the house and drove off - but only after Evans unsuccessfully tried to smash the car's windows.
Evans pleaded guilty to being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, a domestic violence-related charge of reckless wounding and stalk or intimidate.
He will be sentenced on November 19, with magistrate Rodney Brender having ordered a sentence assessment report.
