Johnson will take over the top job from Robbie Jackson when the Bulldogs play their first match of the Twenty20 competition against Wodonga Raiders at Birallee Park next Saturday.
He is also co-coaching the club with Jack Craig and Cam Suidgeest.
Wodonga president Leo McGhee said the trio had worked well together over pre-season.
"It's something different and they have done a really good job so far," McGhee said.
"We have a lot of teams and are trying to spread the workload a bit.
"It seems to be working well."
Wodonga will field a similar line-up to last season with young paceman Harris Lee the only notable departure from Les Cheesley Oval.
He has joined Melbourne Cricket Club.
Exciting Wagga prospect Josh Mills will play for the Bulldogs while Mitch Dinneen is set for a full year after being hampered by injuries last season.
The club is also excited by the development of youngster Michael Grohmann.
