The 20-year-old had been monitored by authorities after talking about bombing a police station, joining ISIS once he was out of jail, and "(going) through a shopping centre with an AK47 and (shooting) everyone in sight".
"I could be a suicide bomber," he said.
He later changed his attitude, and a NSW Supreme Court judge decided in July not to continue with an extended supervision order under terror laws.
The 20-year-old - who can't be named - has spent much of his life in jail, and is back in custody after being arrested at Melrose Primary School on Monday night.
Wodonga Magistrates Court was told the man had also targeted St Monica's Primary School on Brockley Street on Tuesday last week.
IN OTHER NEWS:
He ate food at the school, stole an iPad and went inside a home backing onto the school on Damian Court.
A woman was in bed at the time, and the man took her purse and handbag, but dropped the iPad as he left.
He made his way to the Caltex on Melbourne Road, where he bought three potato cakes on the victim's card, which he then used to catch a taxi to Albury.
He came to police attention at Melrose primary about 10.50pm on Monday while armed with a steak knife.
He was arrested after ransacking offices and trying to take $101 in cash, three iPads and a camera.
"It's pretty sad. It's actually pretty shameful," magistrate Stella Stuthridge said.
"You're just looking at more and more jail, and for what, because you're on the gear?"
Despite being only 20, Ms Stuthridge said jail was pretty much the only option.
The 20-year-old asked to be given a jail term, but the magistrate said she wanted him to "cool his heels for a couple of weeks".
She hoped a better plan than just locking him up could be made when the case returns October 29.
He is yet to enter a plea.
