Emergency services were called to the Great Alpine Road at Myrtleford about 2.15am on Saturday.
A driver came across the crash scene, between Myrtleford and the Happy Valley Road, and found a man dead.
The vehicle left the road and hit a large gum tree at high speed.
The impact threw the North East man, aged in his 20s, from the vehicle.
Paramedics attended but the man was deceased when they arrived.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Roadblocks were put in place at the scene as officers investigated the cause.
The area was searched for other occupants, but the man was the only person in the vehicle before the crash.
