The Virgin plane, which left Sydney at 9.45am on Saturday, had been preparing to touch down.
The crew received an alert and saw a small Piper light aircraft turn in front of their aircraft.
Flight data shows the plane had almost landed when it was forced to increase altitude.

The aircraft continued to travel for several kilometres, looped around, and landed safely.
The incident caused the flight to land 26 minutes late.
A spokesman for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the incident, known as a "loss of separation" between the two aeroplanes, was being investigated.
