"We just didn't believe we had the quality of players and we've been able to rebuild this year, it's a very competitive team," MDGA president Steve Kishere said.
"Since (team captain) Travis Merritt and (MDGA captain) Michael Lane have got the guys together, they're as excited as kids with a lollipop."
Howlong-based Merritt joins Thurgoona quartet Simon Hoppe, Mark Emerson, Danny Mills and club champion Zach O'Collins, while Albury's Sam Bakes is certain to be one of the youngest players at only 14.
"Sam can mix it with the best with his ability to chip and drive, he's got all the game and building every day," Kishere said.
The event has two components with 11 districts competing for the Bruce Devlin Shield.
Central West will look to defend its title at home.
The country champion will also win a place at the NSW Open at Sydney's Twin Creeks later this month.
Border star Nathan Schneider did so in 2007.
In a sign of the tournament's strength, 45 players have a handicap of scratch or less.
