Matt Mildren spotted the snake near Xavier High School while driving home and pulled over to encourage it off the road.
"I nearly hit it, I didn't want it to get hit so I got out," he said.
"It's hard to tell what sort they are at that time of night... it looked too big to be a brown or tiger snake or anything like that."
When he got closer Mr Mildren said he was surprised to see the snake looked to be a python - and a large one at that.
"I'd say it was about six foot," he said.
"It was hard to tell because it was sort of curled up but once it stretched out it looked like it was about two metres long."
Mr Mildren, along with a woman who also pulled over after a close call with the snake while driving, called a reptile catcher but the catcher wasn't able to attend on the night.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Mildren said they were able to guide the snake safely off the road.
"I do a lot of fishing and you see a lot of browns and tiger snakes," he said.
"I'm not too phased by snakes, I knew it was a python so I knew it wasn't venomous."
Mr Mildren said it was important people were informed about snakes and did not harm them.
