Darren Jones, who recently retired after 25 years working for NSW Police, has bought the pub's freehold with business partner Mark Sewell and his wife Michelle moving to the area shortly to run the hotel.
Mr Sewell has more than 40 years experience in pubs and is presently based in Melbourne.
A chef, who will also live on site, has already been recruited.
Mr Jones said his decision to buy the hotel freehold was evidence he was in for the long haul.
"We love the history of the pub being the first pub on the Murray River is something we like being attached to it," he said.
"The area is also fantastic.
"We want to have an emphasis on really, really good food.
"We will be sourcing local produce for our kitchen and working with some of the local beef providers and local wineries and breweries."
In addition to the pub's bar, dining areas, four guest rooms and private function room, there is also a six-bed cabin plus unpowered and eight powered camp sites located at the rear of the hotel.
"It was obviously a bit tired and had been sitting in the long grass for a bit," Mr Jones said.
"But mainly the works have been cosmetic and it's been a case of just getting it back up and going.
"We're still doing that, but it won't take long."
Mr Jones worked predominantly in Sydney as a policeman, but has also had stints at Finley and Merimbula.
