Officers appealed for help to track down James Henry Lawton, a former Corowa-Rutherglen footballer, after he allegedly ran from the Broken Hill Police Station about 2.20pm on Friday.
It was unclear how he managed to escape from custody.
They released a mugshot of the 28-year-old and a description of him.

His freedom was short lived, as he was rearrested in the area only a few hours later.
Police thanked members of the public for their assistance.
It was unclear what he had initially been charged with, but he is facing multiple charges from incidents which allegedly occurred this year.
It's believed he will face additional charges of escape lawful custody.
Lawton faced Broken Hill Local Court on Saturday.
He will return to court on Monday.
