Just after 3am, emergency services were called to the scene near Red Hill Road, after reports of a single-vehicle accident.

Riverina Police District Superintendent Bob Noble said the car was driving south along the highway when it left the road and hit a tree.

He added that a 60-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the car, died instantly.

"Police and other emergency services attended," Superintendent Noble said.

"The highway was closed for a significant period of time as crime scene examiners made an examination of that scene.

"There was a 59-year-old woman located near the scene who, police believe, had been in the vehicle a short time prior to the accident."

Superintendent Noble said the woman witnessed the events leading up to the crash and is assisting police with inquiries.

"She is incredibly shaken, she has been taken to hospital," he said.

"There is a family involved here who is going through an incredibly hard time."

Superintendent Noble said it was a difficult scene for first responders to attend.

"It is a dreadful incident, but we are extremely thankful that no one else was injured," he said.

EARLIER: A man had died following a fatal crash in Wagga this morning.

Just after 3am, emergency services were called to the Olympic Highway, near Red Hill Road, after reports of a single-vehicle accident.

In an online statement, Superintendent Bob Noble said police believe the car left the road and hit a tree. The driver, aged 60, died at the scene.

Officers from the Riverina Police District established a crime scene and are talking with a 59-year-old woman who was in the car prior to the crash, Superintendent Noble said.

"A report will be prepared for the coroner," he said.

Traffic conditions are back to normal.

Earlier, a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said one woman had been transported to Wagga Base Hospital with minor injuries.
