It comes after a majority of club's voted to shorten the competition at the annual general meeting held on Sunday.
Thunder president Rick O'Connell said while the club was not against the 18 round season, they also weren't opposed to having 16 rounds, which had been the case for many years.
"I know a number of clubs expressed that the season was particularly long and players didn't get a lot of rest in there," O'Connell said.

"In a way, 16 rounds is probably more looking after player welfare.
"We were happy to go with what the majority of clubs decided."
However, the Border outfit was against the proposed 14-round cut-back which clubs Temora and Gundagai voted in favour of.
"I think 14 is just too short," O'Connell said.
The new season schedule will also see a split round bye re-introduced.
A profit of $40,974 was made in the 2019 season after a $13,440 loss in 2018.
While the 2020 draw has not yet been released, the changes would see the Group Nine season commence on April 19 with the grand final to be held on September 13.
"Once the draw is finalised and we've seen it we can finalise our season calendar and go from there," O'Connell said.
Thunder are yet to start pre-season training but will host a gathering on Thursday night at Greenfield Park for a game of touch football and a barbecue.
