Javi Martinez finished his playing career at Patties in 2010 before taking over as coach from Alex Vaskovic for the 2011 season.
The veteran will look to lead the club to its first senior men's cup finals appearance since 2012.
St Pats have finished 11th the past three campaigns under Steven Chater (2017) and Phil Page (2018-19).
Martinez will bring a fresh approach having experienced a tough battle of his own with cancer.
Following his diagnosis in 2017, Martinez went through several rounds of chemotherapy before returning to the park with St Pats' over-35s this season, playing a part in their league-cup double.
"There's a lot of friends of mine there, it's a great club and they supported me a lot when I was sick," Martinez said.
"Being around the club and around the young kids excited me and having the opportunity to coach the seniors is amazing."

Martinez learned a valuable lesson during his period of ill health.
"If nothing else, I think everyone should never take life for granted," he said.
"Going to the soccer and doing things like that motivated me to think 'if I can get better from this, I really want to go back to soccer and enjoy every aspect of it.'
"Soccer has been such a big part of my life since I was eight years old and it was such a harrowing experience to think I may never experience soccer again.
"Thankfully I can and I want to take this opportunity with both hands and see what we can achieve."
Martinez has a real sense of optimism about what lies in store for the group.
"It's probably the first time in a long time St Pats has had a group of good youngsters all in one hit," he said.
"I think the club was more shocked when I said my expectation was for us to make the eight and I would see it as a failure in myself as a coach if I wasn't able to deliver that.
"With what we have, if we're not going in there at least with the possibility of making the eight, we're not doing the right thing by ourselves, by our club and by the league."
Meanwhile, after taking St Pats' senior ladies to the league title and cup final, Brett Easton has been reappointed as coach.
Easton shared the role with Josh O'Farrell this year, but will take on the senior position alone in 2020.
"After a great 2019, there is definitely room to improve with what is still a young squad," Easton said.
"There will be a few forced squad changes from last year, but this will be a great opportunity to integrate some new players, particularly some of our younger players coming up from the under-16s and reserves squads.
"We had quite a few debutants last year and the whole squad will be better for the experience we had last season after making the cup final.
"Both the club and I are looking forward to continuing to improve next season and to build on the success we had in 2019."
